28 Caldas da Rainha The demo in Caldas da Rainha, Portugal, near 60 low voltage consumers with different social backgrounds and energy consumption habits. Home customers were selected by analysing different key points such as energy consumption, contracted power capacity, number of people in household, layout and type of home, availability and interest in taking part in this project, etc. All these factors were analysed after applicants submitted a publically available application form and this process was carried out with the support and interaction of the local council. All households were connected to the electricity grid by five secondary substations that feed a total of 810 customers, mostly in urban areas but some in rural settings. The objectives of this demo were to achieve a reduction in network peak load (therefore DSO gains flexibility in operation and network planning), achieve a reduction in overall electricity consumption and significant energy shifts between peak periods and off-peak periods, consumer interaction with the feedback mechanism, self-awareness of household energy use, price awareness and cost savings related to changes in electricity use, environmental awareness - electricity use and climate change impacts. Portuguese Demo Architecture and Tool Deployment The Portuguese demonstration architecture is summarized in Figure 4.6. The figure shows the tools and different environments that have been developed and integrated under the WP3 Portuguese demo. Shown in the bottom left corner are the DSO data sources, which in most cases will feed the project’s data lake – IDP. Another important module is the ADMS environment, which has integrated several tools from INESC TEC and cyberGRID. The Grid and Market Hub appears in the centre stage with a pivotal role to ensure harmonised communication within the DSO environment and between the DSO and other stakeholders. The VPP represents the set of tools directly related with the aggregation of customers. In the right corner, end-users are represented, with several services also being enabled by the gm-hub.
