6 and secure conditions involving an increasing share of renewable energy sources and electrification of the electricity grid. The InteGrid concept and approach is detailed in Chapter 2, where two main challenges were tackled as part of InteGrid’s main objective. Firstly, InteGrid demonstrated the capacity of the distribution system operator when faced with high renewable energy penetration scenarios, high electrification and high integration of other distributed assets. Secondly, InteGrid demonstrated the role of the distribution system operator as a market enabler, where a vast range of grid interaction services were developed involving several distribution grid stakeholders. Key developments are addressed in Chapter 3, where the grid-Market Hub enabled and integrated the release of a considerable number of tools, from advanced distribution grid management systems to top tier multi-period optimal power flow tools and grid operation validation tools, customer engagement applications and market tools, and from virtual power plant concepts to aggregation tools addressingmarket participation. Demonstration of the InteGrid concept within a cross- country geography is explained in Chapter 4. Twelve cases of different uses were defined and demonstrated in a structured arrangement of InteGrid developed technology and tools. In Portugal, the driver was smart- grid predictive and real-time operation was based on flexibility provided by grid customers (low andmedium- voltage levels). In Slovenia, the vPP concept was leveraged for market and grid operation purposes, while in Sweden, the driver was focused on innovative customer engagement methodologies. Cost-benefit Analysis, Business Models and Scalability are core considerations when examining the future integration of InteGrid developments in the evolution of the electricity system as a means of providing rational support for such progress. Chapter 5 presents the Cost-Benefit Analysis results and details on the economics behind the cases defined. Although InteGrid is anticipating trends and testing ambitious concepts, it can be seen that some of the cases of use approach economic viability and others have already achieved viability. A sensitivity analysis was also performed in order to test a number of assumptions. The scalability and replicability of InteGrid developments and concepts were analysed in Chapter 6. These developments were clustered into four domains: i) flexibility management in medium voltage; ii) flexibility management in low voltage; iii) large customer virtual power plants and iv) building flexibility aggregation. Development scalability and replicability results were then divided into four recommendation levels, namely functional, information communication technology (ICT), economic and policy recommendations. Stakeholder acceptance and feedback were constantly monitored during the project, from residential to industrial customers, and local authorities to energy systemexperts by advisory board consultants. Practical workshops were also held where project progress was shared. Last but not least, EuropeanUnion engagement and involvement was assured through bridge2020 participation, also involving continuous project monitoring. Additional details are given in Chapter 7 in survey reports which highlight stakeholder experiences. Recommendations on policy and regulations are provided in Chapter 8, so that the benefits of InteGrid benefits can be integrated into the energy transition policy roadmap, which is ongoing in Europe. With the Clean Energy Package and EU 2030 climate goals in mind, InteGrid regulation and energy policy outcomes were analysed based on three trends: i) flexibility management to optimize distribution grid management; ii) customer access to energy markets; iii) new energy services for EU citizens. Conclusions are shared in Chapter 9, where the main findings of InteGrid are summarized and linked to the evidence and lessons learned during the project. This is followed by Chapter 10 which is dedicated to the InteGrid team. The Project book ends with a summary of deliverables and publications in Chapter 11, based on the knowledge generated by InteGrid.
