Integrid - Bridging the Gap

5 ExECUTIvE SUMMARy The InteGrid Project is an ambitious European project, developed as a research and innovation action funded by the European Union. InteGrid seeks to demonstrate smart grid, energy storage and energy system integration technologies involving an ever increasing share of renewables and electrification within the distribution system. This book aims to share the project’s storyline, from the challenge it addressed, the concept developed to its results and outputs. InteGrid started in January 2017 and finished in October 2020, funded by the H2020 programme, through grant Agreement number 731218. A fantastic, committed, strong and multi-expert team consisting of the distribution system operators (EDP Distribuição-Coordinator, Ellevio and Electro Ljublijana), research institutions (INESC TEC, AIT, KTH, CNET, Comillas), retailers (EDPComercial), technology providers (gE, SAP andCybergrid), water utility (Águas do Tejo Atlântico), small and medium enterprises (SIMAb – LocalLife) and consultant companies (DNVGL, EDP LABELEC) who specified, tested, developed, demonstrated and analyzed the impact of implementing InteGrid in the development of the electricity distribution system in the coming future. The challenge of InteGrid was to demonstrate the feasibility, and associated benefits, of the fully integrated management of the distribution grid under a smart grid paradigm, where reliability, security of supply, customer centric orientation and the integration of renewable sources are key drivers and where the electrical system will operate as the backbone of cross-sector energy transition. InteGrid did demonstrate the integrated management of a series of distribution grid related technologies and solutions in an integrated environment with the perspective of market introduction and competitive mechanisms in coming years, enabling distribution grid customers and market agents to actively participate in grid management. Several flexibility source technologies such as energy storage (thermal electro- chemical), electric vehicles, renewable energy sources and flexibility tools were demonstrated in InteGrid under a real operatingmodel.
